Joel Maxfield
Few names carry the weight and legacy in archery that Joel Maxfield does. A lifelong bowhunter, gear-tester, and industry shaper, Joel’s impact stretches far beyond personal accomplishments—he is woven into the history of modern archery itself. Joel resides in Sparta, WI, where his lifelong passion for archery continues to influence shooters across the state and beyond.
In 1992, Joel became the very first employee at Mathews, joining Matt McPherson with a vision and a revolutionary idea: the single-cam bow. What began as a bold concept quickly grew into one of the most influential innovations the sport has ever seen. For decades, Joel served as Mathews’ original proving ground—testing every bow, pushing equipment to its limits, and ensuring that only the best reached the hands of hunters and archers everywhere. As the saying goes, “If it survives Joel, it’s going to be great.”
Joel is a hunter in the truest sense. His passion for the outdoors and relentless pursuit of big game led him on a journey few will ever experience. After years of adventure, persistence, and countless days in the field, Joel achieved bowhunting’s most elite accomplishment: the Super Slam, harvesting all 29 North American big game species.
What marks Joel’s story is not only success, but the way he reached it: through innovation, grit, and an unwavering love for the bow. His career stands as a testament to pushing boundaries, elevating equipment, and inspiring countless archers to chase their own goals.
